There are some things that from one reason or another become popular practice in business. Now, I'm not going to go on about how trends are started or digress about the exact point commonly referred to as "the tipping point" which is also the title of Malcolm Gladwell's bestselling book, which is when a product becomes popular. What matters here are practices I notices in two specific industries which I feel, as someone who has though a great deal about shopping and stores in general, to be limiting or at worst stifling there growth. I'm talking about the jewelry and shoe store industries.
The same goes for jewelry stores. I'm sure you have walked into a jewelry store at one point or another and saw the cut off chest mannequin like forms bedecked in jewelry. But if you think about it why don't they have a classy dressed mannequin (they do make expensive solid wood mannequins) wearing jewelry. Just as I mentioned before, the whole point of a mannequin is to attract attention to whatever products are being sold in a given store. So why is it that these two industries do not make use of them?
Well, I have asked this question to a manager of a show store and he told me that it was not necessary. He told me that people come to shoe stores to buy shoes and do not need to be reminded why they came by a mannequin. I responded that people also know why the go to clothing stores yet there is hardly a clothing store in existence which does not use mannequins. He had no response.
The same thing happened in a jewelry store except that the women actually considered what I had to say. In any event the purpose for my writing today it to remind everyone in every business that there are some things that are done in your field that have been excepted by everyone and even you as well, nevertheless you should have the courage to rethink what is popular. It will help your store in the long run and who knows;
maybe you will start a trend yourself.
